It is titled for the close-by landmark of Pilot Mountain, a distinct ive geological formation.

It is believed to be the inspiration for the fictional town of Mount Pilot on The Andy Griffith Show and Mayberry RFD.

The Bank of Pilot Mountain, (Former) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Pilot Mountain is positioned at 36 23 4 N 80 28 9 W (36.384407, -80.469083). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of it land.
