It is the home of Mars Hill University, the name of which was inspired by Acts 17:22. The town is positioned 15 miles (24 km) due north of Asheville, North Carolina's biggest city.

Mars Hill is positioned at 35 49 43 N 82 32 52 W (35.828496, -82.547843). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 1.9 square miles (4.9 km2), all of it land.
The town has an altitude of 2,330 feet (710 m), so the climate of the region is considerably cooler than might be expected of a town in a southern state.
Mars Hill University, a private, coed, liberal-arts college, is positioned in Mars Hill.
Founded in 1856 by small-town Baptists, it is the earliest college or college in North Carolina.
Due to the existence of the university, inhabitants of the town of Mars Hill appreciate a much greater range of cultural, intellectual, and entertainment offerings than would usually be found in a town of its size.
The university's enrollment typically runs from 1300 to 1600 students; they are not encompassed in the census calculations of the town's population.
