It is the governmental center of county of Harnett County. Lillington is a part of the Dunn Micropolitan Area, which is also a part of the greater Raleigh Durham Cary Combined Travel Destination (CSA) as defined by the United States Enumeration Bureau.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 4.0 square miles (10 km2), of which, 4.0 square miles (10 km2) of it is territory and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (0.99%) is water.

A postal service called Lillington has been in operation since 1874. The town of Lillington is titled for John Alexander Lillington (c.

1725 1786), aka Alexander John Lillington, who was a Patriot officer from North Carolina in the American Revolutionary War who prominently fought in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in 1776 and served as brigadier general in the state militia. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,915 citizens , 799 homeholds, and 484 families residing in the town.

There were 894 housing units at an average density of 224.0 per square mile (86.5/km ).
