As of the 2010 census the populace was 14,153. It is the governmental center of county of Alamance County. Graham was laid out in 1849 as the governmental center of county of the newly formed Alamance County, and was incorporated as a town in 1851; it became a town/city in 1961.

The Haw River runs along the east edge of Graham, and the town/city extends south as far as Alamance Creek.

According to the Koppen Climate Classification system, Graham has a Humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The small-town school fitness is known as the Alamance-Burlington School System, which was created by a consolidation between the Alamance County School System and the Burlington City School System in 1996.
