Fletcher is home to Asheville Regional Airport, which serves Western North Carolina.

A postal service called Fletcher has been in operation since 1886. The town took its name from the Fletcher family of pioneer settlers. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 5.3 square miles (14 km2), all of it land.

Due to its low tax base and family friendly surrounding, Fletcher is also a magnet for trade that chose the region for its beauty and richness of educated workers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,185 citizens , 1,744 homeholds, and 1,248 families residing in the town.
