As of the 2010 census, the town populace was 1,586.
It is the governmental center of county of Surry County. Dobson is the home of the Shelton Vineyards, the biggest winery in North Carolina.
Dobson was established as the governmental center of county in 1853, replacing Rockford after all territory in Surry County south of the Yadkin River was used to form Yadkin County.
The Edwards-Franklin House and Surry County Courthouse are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km2), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,457 citizens , 555 homeholds, and 339 families residing in the town.
There were 555 homeholds out of which 29.2% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 45.6% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 38.9% were non-families.
In the town, the populace was spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
