The town is a part of the Washington Area positioned in North Carolina's Coastal Plains region.

The meaning of the name Chocowinity appears to be derived from the Tuscarora word, chackauene, meaning "otter" or "little otters." In the early 20th century, Chocowinity became the barns core of the county-wide fitness known as the Norfolk Southern Railway in 1910.

The county-wide Norfolk Southern (one of the predecessors of the undivided system which adopted the same name) had lines between Norfolk, Virginia and Charlotte and served many locations in southeastern Virginia (including chapters to Virginia Beach and Suffolk) and most of easterly and central North Carolina, including Elizabeth City, New Bern, Morehead City, Goldsboro, Raleigh, Durham, Fayetteville, North Carolina and Asheville.

The county-wide carrier was acquired by the Southern Railway, and lent its historic name to the consolidation with the Norfolk and Western in the early 1980s to form the current large Norfolk Southern Railway System.

The barns resumed using "Chocowinity" to designate the locale in 1970, after stockyards telegraphs were replaced with voice communications via 2-way radios.

Chocowinity is positioned at 35 30 57 N 77 6 2 W (35.515788, -77.100528). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all of it land.

In the town, the populace was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town was $29,712, and the median income for a family was $31,875.

About 14.6% of families and 21.3% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 34.2% of those under age 18 and 23.9% of those age 65 or over.
